“Gators!” Martin Dies Jr. State Park
October 1, 2011
It was a packed house for the “Gators” class at Martin Dies Jr. State Park. A boy scout troop was there which is not the “norm.”
I had Austin sit by Anna to guard her from being bumped with her broke arm and Adam sat beside him. The place was so pack Stewart and I decided to stand at the back of the room to take pictures.
Once everyone got situated in the now “to small” building, Ms. Katherine began.
She asked for volunteers to help out with a skit. My kids being as shy as they are did not volunteer but Ms. Katherine called Adam, so he timidly went up, looking at me for reassurance. I give him a nod and a smile and he was fine.
The skit was about Park Rules:
After the skit she went on to explain the rules broken in the skit:
Do not have your dog off a leash.
Do not approach the wildlife.
Do not destroy the plant life.
Do not have fire out of designated area.
Do not litter.
Do not feed the wildlife.
Do not ask the Rangers to do things that are against the rules.
Do not tie up the Ranger. (or litter by leaving rope laying around)
Do not throw things at the wildlife.
Do not rub an alligators belly. (or approach it in any way)
After the skit she began the lesson while all the little actors sat in the front of the class.
Anna and Austin sat quietly and listened to Ms. Katherine explain about alligators with a slide show.
So did Adam.
Ms. Katherine did a great job with such a full house.
We learned many fascinating things about the American Alligator, everything from environment, to breeding, hunting, to rescuing. As always we had a great time.
Check out Martin Dies Jr. State Park’s page on Facebook and “like” their page so you can keep up with the next event they have planned, there is always something going on there. Or go to the Texas Parks and Wildlife web page and find a park near you.
THE END
