A Day at the Beach House
August 13, 2011
“Why don’t you guys load up and come to the beach with us tomorrow. I could use some help fixing a fence and the kids can go to the water slide.” my father-in-law requested. And that is just what we did.
The kids love the water slide. Making their first trek up the hill, Adam is can’t seem to get up there fast enough!
First out of the shoot! I think Adam won!
Adam is going full throttle, Austin is his usual reserved self, giving me the “Really mom? Pictures?” look.
After a fun hour at the water slide we head back to the beach house to fix the fence and have some snacks, for the kids and for the birds!
Feeding the gulls off the porch was really fun, once we got the birds attention!
As the kids fed them they would just hover in mid air waiting for the next piece to be thrown.
After all the scraps were fed, Austin would pretend to throw something to them just to watch them flinch, it was so funny!
Then we just sat on the porch and watched the birds. Our favorite is the homely brown pelican.
Resembling pterodactyls flapping up the coast, we felt as if we had been transported back in time.
Though he may not be the prettiest bird at the beach they carry a certain majestic air about them.
To watch the pelican procession slowly glide toward us from way down the beach was quite beautiful.
At first there were only a few but finally we saw a huge string of them heading our way.
Austin counted nineteen in all.
We also spotted some pipers wandering along the waters edge, the short one is a Baird’s Sandpiper and the tall one a Willet.
I enjoyed watching the waves roll in as the sun glinted across causing the water to sparkle and glisten.
Grackles were in abundance once they discovered that food had been tossed out.
The seagull had some Ruddy Turnstone “groupies” following close behind hoping to find some leftovers.
The fence was fixed, the slide was slid, and I was pretty pleased with the bird pictures I took, and the kids were wearing down, so we decided to call it a day and headed home.
Thanks Paw-paw and Maw-maw for a great day at the beach!
