A beautiful chilly Sunday morning and we hit the road to do some geocaching.

Hiking and geocaching, yes that is what we do in the cool months. So here we are again this time at San Augustine Park…

and we had a picnic breakfast under the group shelter.

 

I loved on my wonderful son. Really is had nothing to do with me freezing because it was brisk that day and I was without my jacket!

100th Find

100th Find

Like with any “sport” when you make milestones you must make it memorable. It is no different with Geocaching. We were nearing out 100th find marker and wanted to try to hit it on something special. I have been looking at one called Teran which was suppose to be a historical location of the Old Fort Teran. 
I plotted our course to end at Teran at precisely the 100th find. This could be tricky if we ended up not finding enough caches before we got to Teran so I made sure we had enough to spare a few DNF (Did Not Finds).

 

Our first stop on our adventure was at Mt Hope cemetery. It had a nice mausoleum for the Masons here. We all peeked in the windows.

As with any tradition, it begins as an action repeated until it becomes expected. And so it seems picnics have become a tradition anytime we go caching.

 

 

We had a cache to find in this road side park but I didn't even look at where it was suppose to be until we had all eaten. If they had been distracted they would have never finished their lunch! By Yahweh’s grace we had parked at the table that was closest to the cache!

Ever since we had started geocaching we had yet to go with out the kids. This time we made a date of it. The kids had stayed the night with my sister and so we took advantage of some alone time to actually get to geocache and be the ones to find the caches. Normally, I guess we are too old and slow to make it to the caches before the children!

 

The first cache on our list was one called the Catahoula Boulders.

I was looking around on the map for some place to go geocaching and I spotted that the local zoo had a handful of them placed strategically around it’s property. The kids always love going to the zoo so it was a double blessing to have caches there. I was somewhat worried that maybe it would be hard to hunt them without being noticed with so many people around but I was ready with my geocaching pamphlet in hand if questioned.

Group pics are a must where ever we go… well most of the group. We parents are not to keen on being in the pictures.

I believe this year Hanukkah spoke to me in a different way than ever before. This year I felt connected to the holiday by the similarity of circumstance.  Back in the time of Judah Maccabee they lived in a country that did not worship YHWH (the God of Israel) in spirit and in truth. Many assimilated to the beliefs of the people with which they lived, even though the many times the word of YHWH says specifically not to do such.  However, there were a few brave souls who did not just “go with the flow” and go along with the crowd. They stood strong on their beliefs of following YHWH’s “instructions to live by”, called the Torah. The would NOT defile themselves with the worldly pagan things. They suffered persecution and ridicule and even death for standing strong against oppression of the enemy, but they did not back down. I felt the strength of the story of Hanukkah for the first time this year. I too have been bashed for my beliefs to follow Torah, no where near to the extent of the Jewish people but enough to understand that if you walk (or attempt to walk) a path to righteousness, expect to be fought by the enemy. The story of Hanukkah inspired me to stand strong in the face of opposition.

Last year, Hanukkah was more of a “fun filled week” but this year I just felt differently about it so we studied more and played less. I try my best to just follow where the Holy Spirit leads me but I have a tendency to try to plan everything too, which usually gets a divine “rewrite” before the day is over. That is just how HE works sometimes.
Each year I decorate with blue, silver, and white because it reminds me of winter. I love it because in Texas we rarely get any snow or any real “feel” of winter so the best I can do is recreate the “feel” inside my home by the decor.

We did do a few fun things like bake cookies. I borrowed this “tradition” from my childhood holidays. We love making and decorating (not to mention eating) these cookies!

Thankful for fall to have arrived bringing with it cooler weather, we wanted to get outdoors as much as we could, so we find ourselves once again at Blackforest. As soon as we got out of the Tahoe I spot some loons floating on the water, some diving for their dinner.

I hear Stewart shout, “Hey, y’all check out this big bird, I think it is an eagle!”

Stewart was off work for a federal holiday we decided to go hiking and sight seeing over in Louisiana for something different. I looked up “Fort Jesup” and thought… Veteran’s Day…Fort… cool! We planned to stop by North Toledo Bend State Park on the way. As we were driving, we stumbled upon a Veterans Memorial Park which seemed out in the middle of no where, of course we stopped.

Stewart and I read the names on the monument while the kids checked out the tank and chopper.
